KORN Guitarist Talks About Starting Record Label
November 26, 2004KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer has spoken to The Boston Globe about the end of the group's long-term commitment to Sony Records and their plan to start their own label for the release of their next project.
"It's kind of like paying off a loan. You think, 'I'm free!' " said Shaffer. "I remember sitting down in Los Angeles 10 years ago and signing with Sony. The lawyers were there, but we were just excited kids drooling and ready to go out and party. The clause in the contract said 'seven albums,' and we thought, 'Well, we only have one right now.' But here we are. We made it.
"We're still focused on what we want to do, but now instead of getting $2 per album, we'll get $8," added Shaffer. He isn't sure what the band will call their new label — maybe Korn Records — but he adds, "Sony has been good to us, and we'll probably have them still distribute the albums."
KORN are now in the curious position of being metal veterans who have gone from underground oddities to mainstream superstars. "We've been around the world four, five, or six times," said Shaffer. "But we're going forward with our foot on the gas pedal. When we set out to create the band, we wanted to be able to express ourselves in any way we wanted. ... And look how long we've been doing it, but we still have the love and respect of our fans. That's cool."
